Weston Lecturer, Calvin DeWitt | Ecological Stewardship

 

Each year the Annual Weston Lecture is given by an invited speaker whose field of endeavour is pertinent to the Augustine College programme and of interest to a public audience. The lecture series is named after the Weston Foundation, whose generous grant makes it possible for Augustine College to sponsor the lecture.

In 2004-2005 we are proud to have Calvin DeWitt as our Weston Lecturer. Calvin DeWitt is Professor of Environmental Studies, University of Wisconsin-Madison and President, Au Sable Institute of Environmental Studies. Co-founder, International Evangelical Environmental Network; founding member and chair, American Society of the Green Cross; chair, Advisory Council, Evangelical Campaign to Combat Global Warming and Climate Change; member, editorial board, Science and Christian Belief; advisor, National Religious Partnership for the Environment. Member, American Association for the Advancement of Science, Sigma Xi Scientific Research Society, American Scientific Affiliation, Christians in Science (United Kingdom), Phi Sigma Biological Honorary Society, Society of Wetland Scientists.

He is an ecologist, university teacher, writer and conservationist, a Christian who enjoys sharing his interest and enthusiasm for ecological restoration and land stewardship. Au Sable Institute in Michigan was founded in 1979 under Calvin DeWitt’s leadership and teaches science, ethics and praxis for sustainable community-building, environmental education and ecological restoration in North America, East Africa and Southern India, the region devastated by the tsunami.
