To Weigh and Consider...A monthly reflection from Augustine College faculty and friends

"The Word of Life is offered to a man and on its being offered, he has Faith in it. Why?... Because he has a love for it, his love being strong, though the testimony is weak."
John Henry Newman* |
When we meditate on how it is we believe and so many of our friends see no need for belief, we are lost in one of the great conundrums of our world. Faith is a gift but as Augustine saw so clearly we are made with a hole in our hearts – the hunger for God – which leaves us restless until we bend the knee, caught up into the mystery of God's love for us shown to us in Jesus. To me, it seems that too often we present the Gospel as a self-help process: to do this, say those prayers, read your Bible, etc., and all will be well. But isn't the Gospel, in truth, much more wonderful, much more like falling in love than acknowledging the truth of a set of propositions. When Jesus offers himself to us as "The Word of Life" and the Spirit gives us the ability to comprehend, our world changes. We know not how, but we know that change has occurred. It is justification to rationalists who want to dismiss this love story as a fairy tale, a fantasy, a childish escape from reality, but it is not. One of the joys of teaching the history of ideas is that time and again key figures turn out to have this love story at the heart of their lives. We need to present our faith as a love story not as a solution to the commotion of life.

| Augustine College Update |
| |
The College had its best-attended Student-for-a-Day ever on March 15, with nine prospective students and other family members. It was a cozy classroom! A few days later, on March 18, was the Weston Lecture with a good turnout and an engaging presentation on Michael Faraday by Dr. Frank Johnson, a former professor at Augustine College. Last Monday the students enjoyed their fourth and final Ottawa Symphony Orchestra concert of the year
Prayer
- Pray for students, as they complete final assignments and prepare for final exams, that stress will be minimal;
- that faculty will handle the work of assessment with calm, discernment, and understanding;
- that preparations for Graduation will go well;
- that students who came to Student-for-a-Day and others who are thinking of attending next year will be blessed in their discernment.
