Prospective Students

The following may be of help in preparing for your year at Augustine.

Residence

Out of town students are expected to live in residence. Residence costs are approximately $2500 per semester plus meals and expenses but this is subject to local market conditions from year to year as the College does not own the properties. See admissions page for more details.

The residences are not co-ed. Students are self-supervising with the support of designated college advisors. Those in residence do their own cooking with usually only one catered meal being provided for the entire student body once a week.

These days are RSVP events so please be sure that you contact the Dean if you are interested in coming. The only cost is for the meals ($20). Contact us for more information.

Student Life

Student life varies with the make up of each year's student body, but here are some regular events and past events.

The President's Dinner. Every year the President of the College hosts a dinner for the students early in the first term.

community mealsCommunity meals. One night a week, the student body shares a catered meal. This is a time for fellowship and fun.

Worship. There is a weekly chapel service at the College. On Sundays students worship at churches throughout the city. Some choose to find one church home, while other choose to use the year to explore a variety of denominations. Local students often invite out of town students to their churches. The University of Ottawa has an active IVCF chapter, which Augustine students are welcome to attend.

Book of the Semester. A reading group consisting of students, alumni and faculty meets weekly to discuss books of common interest. A classic text (e.g., Augustine's On Christian Doctrine, or Augustine's Confessions) is read in the first term and a significant contemporary work in the second (e.g., Chesterton's Orthodoxy). This group is modeled after the Tuesday morning reading group, out of which the College was conceived. It is an excellent opportunity to develop solid listening and discursive skills.

Restless Hearts Café. Typically held on February 14, each year, this pot pourri of entertainment includes readings, music, recitations, lampoonery and harpoonery presented by the students, faculty and staff of the College.

Symphony. For several years tickets to the symphony have been donated to the College students.

Movie Nights. Friends of the College interested in movies have hosted movie nights. Movies are selected for their cinematographic or historic merit. The plot is introduced before the movie and then we discuss the methods, message and metaphors afterwards.

Evenings at the Professors' Homes. During the year professors and their families have invited the students over for dinner and debate, conversation and slides, music and laughter....

Music Nights. On occasion there are nights of music, poetry and readings.

Skating on the CanalSkating on the Canal. Ottawa is known for the Rideau Canal, which, among other things, is used in winter as a skating rink. There is about 8km of ice and the College is located within an easy walk to the canal.

Pick-up Sports. Depending on interest different pick-up sports are played. Ultimate frisbee was the game of choice in 2001. In the past there have also been pick-up hockey games.

Ping-Pong. There is a  ping-pong table at the College, and students and faculty have vied for bragging rights.

Cycling. Ottawa is a city of bicycle paths. Cycling is always a warm weather pastime and a good way to commute around Ottawa. The Gatineau hills are also an excellent place to cycle. Over the past few years, there have been a number of pre-church rides on Sunday to its highest point and back (~40km). Some alumni have stories to tell!

Spelunking. The Gatineau hills have interesting caves. The Lusk Caves have been the destination for hikes. In Fall the caves sport great views and sections of semi-submersed paths which are great fun to navigate (don't forget a change of clothes, especially socks).
