18th Century Enlightenment – Endarkenment
Ideas for Medicine Today

The Enlightenment period was an age of upheaval in philosophy, politics, science and the arts.

In 1775 the American War of Independence took place; 1789 was the French Revolution.

Locke, Hobbes, Rousseau and Diderot were writing and publishing new philosophical ideas. Joseph Banks (1743–1820) President of the Royal Society, companion to Captain James Cook on the Endeavour expedition, left an unparalleled collection of print and manuscript works. This is the age of Goethe, Dickens and Trollope, John and Charles Wesley, George Whitefield and Jonathan Edwards.

The 2024 summer conference hopes to explore some of the history and ideas of these writers and events to better understand their influence on ideas and thinking today. Graeme Hunter, Edward tingley, Hugh Hunter, and Cory Wilson will address philosophy, John Robson political knowledge, John Patrick 18th century scientific and medical progress. 18th century literature and the 18th Century Revival are also part of this year’s programme.
