The Roots of Modern Medicine
2020
June 8-12, 2020
Online/Zoom

“At the core of every moral code, there is a picture of human nature, a map of the universe, and a version of history. To human nature (of the sort conceived), in the universe (of the kind imagined), after a history (so understood), the rules of the code apply.”
Walter Lippmann in Public Opinion (New York: The Free Press, 1965)  as quoted by Thomas Sowell in Intellectuals and Society

Covid-19 Update, May 3, 2020:

Times are hard financially for many, including many physicians who are seeing marked drops in production and revenue.  Times will be difficult for Augustine College as well.  The Summer Conference is an annual event that has served at least three functions:  education, allowing much needed fellowship, and providing a significant funding source for Augustine College.  Based on the circumstances, including the fact that CME credits are not going to be available this year, we have reduced the fees and are making them more of a voluntary donation.  Our suggested donation is $600 for the week, or $80/lecture if you just want to do some of them.  Students and spouses are customarily 1/2 price for the Summer Conference.  And please prayerfully consider giving whatever you can.  See more details about giving under ‘Registration donation’ below.

Blessings,

The Ancient Roots of Modern Medicine: Faith Seeking Understanding

Co-Sponsored by Augustine College

Christian Medical and Dental Associations (USA)

Dates: Monday June 8 – Friday June 12, 2020

The struggle to find meaning and purpose in relation to God has been with us throughout the ages. How do we understand and learn from the writings of earlier philosophers and thinkers? Enjoy listening and interacting with John PatrickJohn Robson, Dominic Manganiello, Edward Tingley and newly qualified physicians this year at the Augustine College Summer Conference.
Join us for Evensong on Sunday evening and bible reflections each day by Father Doug Hayman.  Planned lectures include Brian Butcher on Augustine’s Confessions, Edward Tingley on The Socratic idea of Wisdom and The Art of the Gods, Dominic Manganiello on Sophocles, and Nathan Gamble and Benjamin Holler on the Use and Abuse of the Hippocratic Oath Today.

Reading list:  The Reading list is not long this year.  Dr Butcher recommends the translation of Confessions at the amazon.com link here.   https://www.amazon.com/Confessions-Oxford-Worlds-Classics-Augustine/dp/0199537828

Also, 2 of Sophocles plays are recommended by Dr Manganiello: Philoctetes and Oedipus at Colonus.

A daily devotional from Fr. Hayman and about eight lectures will be prerecorded (with the exception of the lecture on the Hippocratic Oath on Friday which will be live) so you can listen at your convenience.  There will be a live Q&A Zoom session with the speaker at (6 pm EDT, daily).

For those in the US, donating through The American Friends of Augustine College at Just Giving is best.  Donations to Just Giving are tax deductible.  Just Giving asks if you want to add a 5% fee for them.  It is optional, but if you want to avoid that altogether you can send a check to: Mike Peil, M.D., Treasurer, American Friends of Augustine College, 5500 N. Holly Hedges Court, Peoria, IL 61614.  Mike suggests sending a note with your check saying it is for the Summer Conference 2020.  He will send you a tax deductible receipt upon request.
